THE 21ST CENTURY SLAVE
"Meet a 21st Century slave" by Nicholas KristoffThink about it, a 12 year old girl being sold to be a slave for sex. Poonam was kidnapped from Nepal and taken to Mumbai, India and was sold to a brothel. She was forced to have sex with 20-25 men every day, for around $2.50 a man. Many Americans think that slavery died in 1865 when the civil war ended, but it did not. All around the world young girls are being sold for sex, children are forced to do strenuous labor jobs to try to support their family. Slavery comes in all forms, its not just the way americans see it (a specific group of people that are forced to work out on the fields.) Nicholas Kristof appeals to ethos by interviewing Poonam, he builds up the credibility of the article by interviewing the girl who the article is about. He appeals to pathos by writing this article, the article touches the heart and makes the readers more aware of slavery, and how was not just a phase that was ended in the 1800's, it is still here today, just not with a whip.
